The iconic Liberties Fun Run is set to make a triumphant return on Wednesday, July 24th, bringing together over 1,200 runners, from elite athletes to enthusiastic walkers, all in support of St. James’s Hospital. This year's event promises to be especially memorable with a new route that includes the historic St. James’s Gate for the first time, thanks to our sponsor, Diageo, and a new strategic partnership with the Liberties Festival. Celebrating and supporting the launch is Olympian and long-distance runner Catherina McKiernan, who will be joining them also at the run.
Celebrating its deep-rooted history in one of Dublin's most vibrant neighbourhoods, the Liberties Fun Run is a unique 4-mile timed road race that takes participants through the heart of old Dublin. The run will kick off at 7.30PM from the beautiful grounds of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, and the route will encompass some of the most famous sites in the Liberties, including for the first time St James’s Gate, as well as the traditional route of Francis Street, The Coombe, and Fatima.
Diageo, headquartered at St. James’s Gate Brewery, has a longstanding history in the Liberties, dating back to 1759 when Arthur Guinness established what would become one of the world’s largest breweries. This partnership marks a significant, reinforcement of their commitment to supporting local initiatives and celebrating the heritage of the Liberties area.
The Liberties Fun Run has long been a highlight of Dublin's running calendar, known for its inclusive atmosphere and the vital funds it raises for St. James’s Hospital. Organised by the St. James’s Hospital Foundation, the event supports various initiatives within the hospital, ensuring that it continues to provide exemplary patient care and services to the community.
This year, the run is proudly featured as a flagship event of the Liberties Festival, a celebration of the unique culture, history, and people of the Liberties which runs from the 22nd -27th July. The festival partnership promises to enhance the experience for participants and spectators alike, offering a vibrant mix of activities, entertainment, and community engagement.
“We are thrilled to bring back the Liberties Fun Run with exciting new elements and partnerships,” said Aisling Nolan, Director of Development St James’s Hospital Foundation. “This event is more than just a race; it's a celebration of community, heritage, and health. We are grateful to Diageo and the Liberties Festival for their support and look forward to a memorable event that will raise much needed funds and make a significant impact on the services we provide.”
“We are delighted to be the main sponsor of the Liberties Fun Run in 2024. It’s a privilege to open up the iconic St James’s Gates to the Liberties runners, and it allows us to give back to the heart of the community we’re a part of,’ said Shane Kelly, Director of Corporate Relations at Diageo Ireland. ‘As we stand on the shoulders of the giants who came before us, we are reminded of the strong legacy of the Guinness family. We recognise our responsibility to continue investing in our community, to become more present, more visible, and more integral to the fabric of Dublin 8. Our partnerships with St. James’s Hospital Foundation and with the Liberties festival are so important to us in keeping this legacy alive in our community.’
